Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt Response: There are many different family traditions from my culture, and many of them do not stray far from some of the expectations given to the girl in the poem. One family tradition that is similar to the poem that is done in my family is to set the table for others and guests. One contrast to the expectations that are given to her is to iron clothing for others; that is just something that isn't common in our household. We believe that family members should iron their own clothing, as it is their responsibility and not the responsibility of others to do their work.

Summary: Today, we took our pictures for our school ID and were unable to discuss anything in class.

Reflection: I learned that it is okay to be yourself sometimes. Many people discourage that way or act or speak or how you look, but that it fine, no one can penetrate what you believe in.

As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.
